Historical Setting   1:1

- Scripture of History   2 Kings 21-23; 2 Chronicles 33-35

- Zephaniah’s Ancestry: 4 generations mentioned, of royal birth;

                              likely lived in Jerusalem cf. 1:4 – “this place”

          Hezekiah    715-686 B.C.       Amon  642-640 B.C.

          Manasseh   697-642 B.C.       Josiah  640-609 B.C.

- see 2:13 – destruction of Assyrian ‘Nineveh’ by Babylonians

                    is still future (612 B.C.)

- Josiah’s Reforms:

   1. 2 Chron. 34:3-7 = destruction of much idolatry started by

                Manasseh and Amon (sins listed in Zeph. 1:3-13; 3:1-7)

   2. 2 Chron. 34:8-35:19 = in 18th year of his reign (622 B.C.) when

                Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law in the

                Temple…Josiah died in 609 B.C.

POINT: Zephaniah’s prophecy was between 630-625 B.C..  He

              was a contemporary of Jeremiah & Habukkah…the

              ‘11th-Hour Prophets’ of Judah which was deported by

              the Babylonians from 605-586 B.C. -> 70-year captivity

                                                          …taken from Walk Thru the Bible

THEME = Judgment & Restoration in the ‘Day of the Lord’

PURPOSE = to warn Judah and call her to Repentance (2:1-3: “Seek”)

KEY VERSES:  1:14, 15; 2:1-3

KEY CHAPTER (3): has two distinct parts of the “Day”

                                   = Judgment and Restoration

New Testament Statements of Christ:

   1. Zeph. 1:3 cf.  Matt. 13:36-43 = Parable of the Weeds

   2. Zeph. 1:15 cf. Matt. 24:29-30, 36-44  re: timing of that ‘Day’

2

 Judah and the nations were judged (past -2:4-15).  At Christ’s second coming (future) there will be judgment, and He will fulfill the promises

of Zeph. 3:9-20.  Note 3:15

…prophecy has 23 references / expressions to the “Day of the Lord”

“What Does Zephaniah Teach US?”

1. God is True to His Word

- history has been fulfilled and history will be fulfilled (Matt. 24:37-39,

  _note Noah (past); scoffers “deliberately forget” God’s track-record

    2 Pet. 3:3-10, note the Flood) - impact of that ‘Day’ is universal

2. The Character of God is Revealed

= God is Righteous ->  will be severe and reveal wrath against SIN

= God is Restorative -> will be merciful and reveal his kindness to

    the REPENTANT

…we cannot separate these aspects of God’s Character

3. God Calls US to REPENTANCE

- Pride is the Problem   3:11 = not submit to God’s authority

- Humility is the Solution   3:12, 2:3 = “Seek the Lord”; an eager

                      responsiveness to His revealed Commands / Word

- Questions:  What do I believe about God? Do I BELIEVE God?

                      What is my attitude toward Him?

-Repentance: the theme of Luke 15, brings joy to God

                    : Jesus   Luke 13:3; Matt.4:17

                    : John the Baptist    Matt.3:8 – produce ‘fruit’

                    : Paul    Acts 17:30 (command); 26:20 (->deeds)

                    : Peter  2 Pet.3:11-14  cf. 3:1-2  = repentance thinking

4. Christ-followers Live With Assurance!

- FAITH in God re: the Present and the Future

                                  -> a Renewed Perspective  Daily  3:12 ff.

= Life characterized by Belief, Rejoicing, and Anticipation

    Note Zephaniah’s response = Worship, Rejoicing, Blessing

…God WILL accomplish His Purposes   cf. Romans 8:18
