- Jewish tradition says he was a member to The Great Synagogue that

collected and preserved the canon of revealed Scripture

- Matt. 23:35 – he was murdered between the Temple and the altar

- Zechariah means ‘God Remembers’ i.e. His covenant with the Jews

…this book is a reminder that God remembers his people

WHY did Zechariah Speak for God?”

->Purpose of Haggai & Zechariah = urge them to complete the

Temple in order to experience God’s blessing   1:7, 8

OVERVIEW OF ZECHARIAH

Ch. 1-8 = Encouragement to rebuild the Temple         (Present)

Ch. 9-14 = Anticipation of Israel’s Coming Messiah   (Future)

A. The Eight Visions   Ch. 1-6 = PICTURES

  - given by God on “one troubled night”, Feb.15, 519 B.C.  1:7, 8

  - reveal the ‘peaks’ of God’s program, without every ‘valley’ detail

  - General Themes: Visions 1-5 speak of Comfort     Ch.1-4

                             : Visions 6-8 speak of Judgment   Ch.5-6

B. The Four Messages    Ch.7-8 = PROBLEMS

…in response to the Question about Fasts   7:1-3

  1. a Rebuke      7:4-7           3, a Restoration    8:1-17

  2. a Reminder   7:8-14         4, a Recovery       8:18-23

C. The Two Burdens   Ch.9-14 = PREDICTIONS

  1. 1st Advent & Rejection of Israel’s Coming King      Ch.9-11

  2. 2nd Advent & Acceptance of Israel’s Coming King   Ch.12-14

WHAT does Zechariah’ Prophecy teach US?”

1. Israel’s Place in History = NOT forgotten; ‘God Remembers’

2. The Coming of the Christ

…BOTH Advents: 9:9, 10 – in Humility / 14;1-21 –to Reign

- 3:1-2: angel of the Lord                 - Ch.11: Good Shepherd

- 3:8; 6:12, 13: Righteous Branch                   rejected and sold

- 6:13: King & Priest                         - 12:10: pierced

- 10:4: the Cornerstone, etc.              – 13:7: smitten Shepherd

POINT: these prophecies were fulfilled in detail in Jesus the Christ

3. Spiritual Reality = Future Blessing depends on Present Obedience

***they were not just building a building, rather building a FUTURE

4. God is in the ‘Business’ of Returning People!

- Israel: Pre-exile = would not listen to God or His Prophets

: Exile = experience of being captive due to their SIN

(Choose to Sin, Choose to Suffer

           : Post-exile = a Returning and Restored People!

- Rejoice that WE are NOT FORGOTTEN!

   1. the Possibility of Repentance – DAILY   Luke 5:31 ,32

   2. the People who Restore   Gal.6:1-2; Jude 22, 23

   3. the Privileges to those who Return   Luke 15

- Rejoice! We ARE a ‘Come-Back’ Church!
