THE MINOR PROPHETS

- Hosea –

“WHEN was Hosea written?”  Hosea 1:1

- Kings of Judah (767-686 B.C). = Uzziah, Jothan, Ahaz, Hezekiah

- Kings of Israel (793-722 B.C. -> captive to Assyria) = Jeroboam II,

Zechariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah, Hoshea

- Scripture: 2 Kings 14-20 = near the end of O.T. Israelite History

“TO WHOM did Hosea Speak?”  Hosea 4:1; 5:1, 3, 5, 11,13

- Israel (Northern Kingdom) cf. “Ephraim” = largest tribe

- Hosea’s 40-year ministry (755-710 B.C. approximately)

= a contemporary of Amos, Isaiah, Micah

“WHY did Hosea Speak to Israel?”

- a clue: Hosea means ‘salvation’ cf. God’s Intent for Israel

- Under Jeroboam II Israel prospered and grew, yet was spiritually

  ‘adulterous’ and morally corrupt

- Israel’s Sin (Hosea 4:1, 2, 6, 10b-12 -spirit of prostitution -> Impending

   Judgment (Hosea 5:14, 15; 9:7, 8), hence Hosea’s plea (Hosea 6:1-3a; 14:1)

“What Does Hosea’s Prophecy Teach US?”

A. Hosea’s Role is to Speak for God   Hosea 1:1

= call of every Biblical Leader   2 Tim.4:1-5; Heb. 13:17

- God speaks/Holy Spirit speaks   Heb.1:1 ,2; 2 Pet.1:20, 21

Note: the Man’s Character AND the Message Communicated

…Hosea (the gentle prophet) is loyal to, “What does God say?”

B. Hoses Reveals God’s Unchanging Character

- Love for Israel = Holiness demands Justice/Discipline with a

                               view to Restoring His people

- as in the N.T. God speaks of Rebellion, He Rebukes,

demands Repentance/Return, with a view to Reconciliation

- God’s Loyalty pursues and redeems Israel, and US

C. Hosea Reveals God’s View of Marriage

- not changed since Genesis 2:24

- Note the EMOTION of Hosea and God re: broken covenant

(Adultery, Idolatry, Prostitution   cf. Israel in Jeremiah 2-3)

- God’s View of Marriage remains   Hebrews 13:4

Notations about Marriage:

1. BOTH Personally responsible for Holiness and Faithfulness

2. Hosea nor God were responsible for their partner’s SIN

    (spiritual ‘adultery’ -> moral adultery)

3. God-like people seek reconciliation

“Adultery, or any sin, is first of all grounds for forgiveness.”

D. Hosea Reveals God’s Moral Standard

POINT = “Don’t be like Gomer and Israel!”

- Call to be DISTINCT from the Nations (Deut.18, Exodus 20)

- Call to DISTINCTION as Christ-followers (Eph.4:17-5:21)

a. James 4:4-10 = same spiritual and moral concern

b. Galatians 5:19-22   cf. 22, 23 = Who do we yield to?

c. 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8: taught to change, to be pure… to

disobey clear instruction is to disobey God (8)    cf. 1 Cor.5

“God cares too much for His people

to allow them to persist in sin.”
